If you’re new to Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu, then the idea of what size gi you’ll need can be a bit overwhelming at times. In this BJJ Gi sizes guide, we’ll take a look at the various sizes available on the market complete with jiu-jitsu gi size charts. This will provide you with an idea of gi sizing based on two popular brands to help you decide what size BJJ gi may be right for you.
Kids BJJ Gi Sizes
Children’s BJJ Gis are sized using the prefix of M. They come in sizes M0000, M000, M00, M0, M1, M2, M3 and M4, with M0000 being the smallest going up in size to M4, the largest BJJ gi size for kids. Most child sizes don’t have a weight guideline but instead work off the height of the child.
As with all gis, there can be a degree of shrinkage when gis are first washed. Couple this with the fact that kids grow like beanstalks, if your child is between sizes, it’s probably best to opt for the larger size of kids BJJ gi so that when it does shrink or they have a growth spurt, it’s not going to be too tight on them.
There aren’t many companies that create kids BJJ gis but Tatami Fightwear, Fumetsu and valor Fightwear are the main ones. Blitz Sport also carry a line of Kids Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu gis that share the same sizes as shown below.

Women’s BJJ Gi Sizes
Women’s BJJ gi sizes are usually recognisable due to the fact they are prefixed with an F (for Female). They come in sizes F1, F2, F3, F4 and F5.
Ladies BJJ Gi sizes usually indicate that the BJJ gi is cut in a different way to the men’s in order to compliment and accommodate the body shape of women. This usually involves gi pants that have room for bigger hips and bottom, whilst the jacket is tailored to fit better around the waist and shoulders with shorter sleeves and room for the bust. This gives the gi a more fitted look compared to a man’s gi that would look quite baggy in comparison. Though be warned, not all women’s gis fit female bodies correctly so it’s also worth considering the men’s gis.
In addition to the cut of the gi, women’s BJJ gis also start at a smaller size than men’s in order to accommodate females who may be shorter. A men’s A1 BJJ gi is usually quite big for a petite female (5ft or under) so an F1 is better suited.
Not all BJJ companies sell women’s jiu jitsu gi sizes, but a few that do include Tatami Fightwear, Scramble and Fumetsu.
Below is a rough size guide of women’s gi sizes based on the size charts from Tatami Fightwear and Fumetsu. Please note that these size charts are only an approximation and the size and fit may change dependent on style bought. Some gi brands, Tatami Fightwear in particular, also offer long and curvy cuts in addition to the standard F sizes, i.e. F2L for women with longer arms and legs. Therefore, it’s always best to check the manufacturer’s size charts as these offer more detailed and provide better measurements.

Men’s BJJ Gi Sizes
Men’s BJJ gis are the standard sized gis you’ll find at most Jiu-Jitsu retailers. In reality, there are unisex gis and can be worn by both men and women though their sizes usually come up on the bigger side and can sometimes be too big or baggy for women who want a more fitted cut.
Men’s BJJ gi sizes are prefixed with A and come in sizes A0, A1, A2, A3, A4, A5 and occasionally A6.
Different styles of gi in a brand can come up a different fit so it’s always important to check the size chart for the particular style you’re interested in. Brands like Tatami Fightwear and Fumetsu also offer extra cuts within a size, e.g. using L suffix to denote that the gi has a longer leg and sleeve length.
Below I have included a rough guideline of sizes based on the standard sizing (no alternate cuts) to give you an idea on how different brands measure up for men. Please note however that their official size charts include more sizing for their L and H cuts so do check the respective websites
